As a behavioral health specialist at Sanitas, my job is not done until my patients feel better. When a patient says, “I didn’t realize how much it means to me to feel heard,” it makes my job worthwhile. It’s a good day at work when my patients have left their appointment feeling heard, validated and empowered. When my family immigrated from Nicaragua, they planted roots in Miami, in “el barrio de Wynwood” where I was born. Though not rich, we had all we needed, especially the support of our family-oriented community where all the neighbors knew one another. It’s still home for me and a very dear place. Though it has changed in the way it looks, the culture remains the same. When it was time to study for a career, I decided on psychology, exclusively mental health, because I was interested in learning what makes people behave, think and feel the way they do. Learning about how our mind, body and soul are connected can be a powerful way to interact with others. When I take off my coat, I like cooking or watching movies. I also enjoy spending time with my family and Asher, my pet rabbit.
